Gray mold

Disease Botrytis cinerea · also called botrytis

Damaged fruit, pods, or earsPowder, fuzz, or mold

How to spot it

Fuzzy gray-brown mold on fruit, flowers, and stems, with soft brown rot underneath. It comes in cool, damp weather.

What it does

Berries rot on the plant, flowers brown, and stems can die back.

What to do now

  • Pick off moldy fruit and flowers and throw them away.
  • Pick ripe fruit every day or two.

Keep it away next time

  • Space and prune plants so air moves.
  • Mulch strawberries with straw so berries don't sit on soil.
  • Water the soil in the morning, not the leaves.
